Fun Facts About David

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with three things: U.S. Presidents, the Academy Awards, and Stephen Sondheim.

My favorite movies are All About Eve and The Silence of the Lambs.

My favorite director is Federico Fellini.

My favorite novels are Portnoy’s Complaint, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Invisible Man, Death In Venice , and (most recently) A Visit From the Good Squad.

During college, I stalked literary critic Harold Bloom for most of my freshman year. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

While I was at Yale for undergrad, I wrote several terrible scripts, drank way too much, and froze my ass off.

While I was at USC for grad school, I won the Jack Nicholson Screenwriting Award for a semi-autobiographical script I wrote called Oreo.

I’ve worked for Fox, for CBS, and for Google/YouTube. But my favorite job to date has been teaching film to ninth and tenth graders. (Gender breakdown of the class: 17 boys, 1 girl.)

I’m a volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America.

I love chicken. No seriously, I really love chicken.

I do a pretty awesome Louis Armstrong impersonation.

I will reenact the last scene from There Will Be Blood at the drop of a hat.

Favorite movie quote: “…But Mrs. Mulwray, I goddamn near lost my nose last night. And I like it. I like breathing through it.” –Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson), Chinatown

Favorite literary quote: “Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.” — Walt Whitman

Oh, and I have a weird fascination with Chinese opera… but we won’t go into that.
